Themes and topics

The main theme of the AIWW Conference 2019 is ‘Implementation of Integrated Solutions by cities, industries, utilities and financiers: from cases to bankable projects.’ At the AIWW Conference leading innovators from municipal operators, industrial system developers, utilities and production chain designers will discuss the ambitious task to improve water system management. Together with municipal and industrial leaders and investors they will rethink the institutional approach to water system management with special attention for the two overall AIWW Conference-themes: a circular water economy and climate change adaptation. For the AIWW Conference 2019 these themes are defined in the following four themes:

Energy transition and resource recovery

Circular business models open the way to incorporate multiple principles for value creation. Beyond financial values, also environmental and social values are taken into account. Advanced integrated solutions to complex challenges are needed to create impact on resource recovery and energy transition for a better climate and to realize the SDG’s for a better-balanced world. This theme also focusses on how to structure projects and make them bankable?

We welcome submissions on the following topics:

Financial models for circular solutions

Thermal and kinetic energy and aquatic biomass solutions

Creating value out of wastewater

Renewing infrastructure for a circular approach

Integrating water and resource management

Worsening droughts and polluted water sources call for improved planning and decision-making processes, better coordination and sustainable use of resources while minimizing conflicts among users. There is a need for increased cooperation among resource user groups to balance the economic, environmental and social needs of society. In addition there is a need for integrating water solutions in innovative ways and for a common understanding and appreciation of benefits in local catchments, cities and/or industrial zones. Challenges of emerging concern are contaminants, recreation related to urban water and a growing need for food production. Part of the solution can be found in the area of: a river basin approach, open data, improved collaboration with local (public and private) stakeholders and alignment with local public policy objectives.

We welcome submissions on the following topics:

Financing models for Integrating Water and Resource Management

Resource recovery and local markets

Pollution pressure and smart water allocation

River basin approach and nature based solutions

ICT & Data: artificial intelligence and smart robotica

New ICT & Data solutions can be a game changer in water management and offer huge opportunities to combine data with artificial intelligence and smart robotica. Digital solutions are the key drivers for innovation in the water sector to cope with challenges like creation of new services, need for new competences and management tools.

We welcome submissions on the following topics:

Data management and co-creation

Smart operations and asset management

Artificial intelligence: new services & efficiency

Cyber security: how to keep our infrastructure secure?

Blue-Green solutions for (urban) resilience

Growing challenges of climate change ask for continued collaboration to build more resilient communities. Innovative solutions can be found in the area of: (i) next generation green flood inundation maps; (ii) resilient critical (green) infrastructures & aligning (urban) objectives; (iii) protecting existing infrastructure and other capital and social assets by building resilient and blue-green solutions to extreme weather events and increased variability.

We welcome submissions on the following topics:

Financing models for blue-green solutions

Inclusive city master plan: design, build, reuse, finance

Building more resilient communities

Resilient critical infrastructure

We are honored to invite you to the 16th World Congress on Anaerobic Digestion to be held in Delft (The Netherlands) in June 2019. This international platform to discuss advances in anaerobic digestion and related processes is an event that is part of the IWA Anaerobic Digestion Specialist Group conference series, this time organized by The Netherlands and Belgium.

The theme of the 16th issue of the AD conference is “Accelerating natural cycles with anaerobic digestion.” We accelerate natural cycles from small to large scale on sewage, sludge, manure or agrowaste. We increasingly treat industrial wastewater anaerobically, and these engineered digestion systems allow recovery of energy and resources including carbon and nutrients. AD16 will further strengthen this evolution, by bringing together and activate debate across the multiple disciplines needed to understand the processes related to anaerobic digestion. We invite engineers, biotechnologists, microbiologists, chemists, physicists, mathematical modelers, and technology innovators to participate. All pioneers, freshmen, and leaders in the field, and other interested parties, are welcome to critically discuss the state-of-the-art of anaerobic digestion and learn about new developments. Attendants can join our pre-conference workshops, visit latest-generation installations and anticipate future breakthroughs and developments.

Specialized short courses will be offered before the conference to reinforce knowledge on certain innovative aspects. These courses will be organized by Ghent University, University of Leuven, Wageningen University and Delft University. All are conveniently located in The Netherlands and Belgium, all within less than 3 hours by train from Delft.

We look forward to welcoming you to Delft, the birth place of the founding father of microbiology Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, the home of the Delft School of Microbiology and the Dutch painter Vermeer.

Cities and metropolitan regions around the world are acknowledging that local leadership must rethink the capacity, use and functionality of the urban water system and waterfront space. The urban water challenges of tomorrow cannot be overcome by solutions from the past. More sophisticated strategies are required to move fast from planning to financing and implementation to turn oppressive and far-reaching climate challenges into opportunities and safeguarding for local communities. In our interactive workshop at the recent 100 Resilient Cities Global Summit we discussed these topics… Read more >>

Extreme weather events, causing floods, droughts, can have major implications for the performance of water and wastewater infrastructure and services, and the availability of good quality water. Related to sanitation, post-flood areas show a significant occurrence of water-related infectious diseases. Disease outbreaks following heavy precipitation or floods are often the result of contamination of the drinking-water supply systems and living environment. During droughts, drinking water availability and quality can also be affected. Occurance of extreme weather events are increasing and providing adequate services can be challenging.

In response to extreme events, adaptation strategies are being developed and implemented, at policy level, but also by drinking water and sanitation service providers. Water and sanitation safety plans (WSSP), as recommended by the World Health Organization, offer comprehensive risk-based management tools to enhance these efforts focusing on preventive measures and emergency response and preparedness planning.

During the 2017 6-7th April pan-European Symposium Water and Sanitation Safety Planning and Extreme Weather Events, cross-cutting topics will be addressed. Presentations and workshops will be organised with the goal of presenting achievements, experiences and challenges of water and sanitation professionals and regulators, in addressing extreme weather events, with a special focus on cases from the pan-European region. But is not limited to the region alone.

Swimming and bathing are two of the most popular activities for all age groups in many countries all over the world. The previous five International Conferences on Swimming Pool and Spa have shown that swimming and bathing is healthy. International scientists perform high quality research to safeguard and further improve the health benefits of swimming and bathing, based on research topics that include novel and updated disinfection techniques, water- and air treatment, bather safety (chemical, microbiological, and physical), education and surveillance.

Information Technology (IT) enabled solutions for integrated urban water management are the key to realizing a significant reduction in water consumption, environmental emissions and costs, and an improvement of water quality and control of installations. Today, water management only addresses autonomous parts , leading to a highly segregated water sector.

IT enabled solutions can solve the segregation that now hinders water organizations, technology providers and integrators to make the best use of new and available technologies to improve efficiency. They offer potential to embed real time forecasting, advanced monitoring, model based control and new approaches of active consumer involvement.

The New Developments in IT & Water Congress is an international event that will include the depth and breadth of relevant IT solutions in every aspect of the water cycle, recognising that while IT solutions in water management are implemented locally,
research and best practice are advanced through sharing results and knowledge globally.
