Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands
Contributing to sustainable development is the common thread in Fred's professional career. After completing his biology study, Fred worked as an environmental specialist for FAO, dealing with agriculture and plantation forestry in the context of watershed management. Fascinated by the multidisciplinary character of water management, Fred continued to work as a consultant linking environment, biodiversity, agriculture and forestry into an integrated approach to water management. Since 1991 he works for the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a thematic expert on environment and water. In this capacity he has been posted to Embassies in Indonesia, Kenya, Bolivia, Pakistan and Rwanda, while also completing a five year stretch as senior water expert at the Ministry in The Hague. Fred believes that proper water management is essential for sustainable development and that water management needs to take linkages with other sectors into account. He is currently based in Accra, Ghana, implementing an innovative WASH program.
