Energy & water: recovery and neutrality
The water cycle can be a source of energy because it contains chemical as well as thermal energy. Water treatment and water management require high energy volumes CO2 emissions. Becoming climate neutral, achieving improved energy savings and extracting energy out of the water cycle are discussion points to be addressed in this session. It will deepen the understanding of waste water treatment, specifically how positive outcomes can be generated by, for example, using recovered fat from wastewater as a resource, challenges, chances and crossovers for global players in industry, as well as cases and solutions for SMEs.The topic is introduced by Jörg Simon, CEO Berliner Wasserbetriebe and moderated by Bruno Tisserand, chair of EUREAU.

Case: Reuse of biofat recovered from wastewater as product
Many companies are interested in fat recovery due to the benefits of a lower consumption of chemicals, lower sludge disposal and the recovery of the fat. This presentation will investigate how to implement fat recovery successfully by finding suitable options for the reuse of recovered biofat and biosolids.

Solution: Waste Treatment in Accra Ghana: Reinvent, Reuse and Recycle - Solutions offered by the Ghana Netherlands WASH Programme (GNWP), Ghana
Accra produces 3000 tons of waste per day. Half of the waste is collected and dumped on (illegal) landfills, causing problems.
The other half is not collected, causing more problems. Accra needs to move away from landfills. Private sector, through Dutch support, implements business models to reuse waste.

SMEs in Energy & Water Nexus: Cases, Solutions, missions and matchmaking
Energy in Water (EnW) is an European Strategic Cluster Partnership – Going international (ESCPs-4i) which aims to sup-port and harness the growth and innovation potential of European SMEs operating across the water-energy ‘Nexus’. EnW has developed the strategy to drive the international competitiveness of SMEs through developing solutions to global challenges and market opportunities. During the session Energy & Water: Neutrality and Recover an overview of the project and its results will be presented, as well as some solutions and cases identified on the way. Audience feedback and recommendation on the role of cluster partnership in driving international competitiveness of SMEs is warmly welcomed.
