Deep tunnels and asset management in urban sanitation & stormwater management
This session gives an overview of using ‘deep tunnels’ in urban sanitation and storm water management. There is a strong relation with asset management. Singapore Public Utility Board, Paris SIAAP (Public utility for sanitation of Great Paris) and London Tideway provide details on their different experiences and approaches in the choice of using tunnels. Why did they decide for deep tunnels? They talk about 3 categories of tunnels and purposes : urban stormwater management for flood protection, combined sewer to protect receiving from pollution caused by Combined Sewer Overflow, and last but not least, main infrastructure for waste water transport. Discussion can focus on the specific tunnel solution in relation to circumstances like dense cities, soil condition, and purposes, costs, efficiency, operation, real time control, maintenance, etc. Conclusion: Why should cities think about planning and constructing tunnels for the future?
