Sarphati sanitation award
The Sarphati Sanitation Awards started in 2013 as an initiative from World Waternet, Aqua for All and the Netherlands Water Partnership, endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Sarphati Sanitation Awards are named after Dr. Samuel Sarphati, an industrious entrepreneur and health practitioner who started a profitable business in the 19th century to free Amsterdam of human waste by collecting the waste, transporting it out of the city and used it as fertilizer for crops such as wheat, which was in turn supplied to a low-cost bread factory. His initiatives greatly improved the quality of life and health of people in the city of Amsterdam. Like in 2013 and 2015, Aqua for All and World Waternet will organise the Sarphati Sanitation Awards in 2017. During the AIWW opening ceremony, the Mayor of Amsterdam will publicly honor the winner of the Sarphati Sanitation Award for Life Time Achievement and the Sarphati Sanitation Award for Young Entrepreneurs. Aiming to find the new Dr. Samuel Sarphati, the two winners of this year will present their cases, and together with the audience, reflect on the financing of sustainable sanitation services and integrated sanitation chain solutions such as circular economy, water cycle and smart city solutions. Additionally, last year’s winner will present their solution, reflecting on progress made and the sanitation challenge worldwide, supporting SDG 6.2. Financial- and sanitation experts, operators, decision makers and the private sector will participate from the audience to discuss the bankability / finance-ability of business cases and Dutch Waste Water Consortium for Fast Growing Towns.
